Our History
2006
1985
1985
Jodi Bauman & her husband, Harold, visit Oaxaca, Mexico. Jodi finds herself deeply moved by children selling trinkets on the street and befriends a boy named Ruben. She eventually earns the trust of Ruben’s mother and assists with enrolling him and his siblings in school.
Early 1990s
Jodi & Harold visit Oaxaca frequently and work to help more families enroll their children in school. Realizing the expenses associated with attending school, they begin raising money to aid their efforts.

The Baumans travel to Oaxaca every 6 weeks and support 70 children to achieve an education.
1995
2011
Jodi & Harold set up their first working office under the name “Oaxaca Streetchildren Grassroots” in Oaxaca City.
2000
Centro de Esperanza building at 308 Crespo is purchased
2001
Oaxaca Streetchildren Grassroots (OSCGR) is established as a 501c3 non-profit in the United States. 200 students are being supported by the program at this time.
2006
Jodi Bauman passes away.
2010
Significant damage to the roof at CEI leads to temporary closure of the building.
2024
2011
OSCGR leads the fundraising efforts and raises $160,000 to renovate the CEI building
2022
CEI’s second center, Casa Emilie, opens in Xoxocotlán, a suburb outside of Oaxaca City. Casa Emilie is financed by the Herb & Emilie Steiner Foundation.
2026
2024
OSCGR is renamed Oaxaca Youth Empowerment or OYE.
2025
Mini-grants pilot launches to support 3 non-profits in Oaxaca: Proteccion a la Joven, Centro de Aprendizaje, and SiKanda.
